Well, it had to happen... At risk of sounding a little cynical, it seems to me that all new technology gets reduced to the size of a pea then blown back up to massive proportions in the name of functionality, or fashion, or something to do with the word 'retro'. The latest instalment from hi tech lords of the land Takara Tomy is a camera with an integrated printer. Now, since cameras have been reduced in size so that it is possible to take a picture with something no larger the aforementioned virtual pea, the launch of a digital camera with a built in printer seems somewhat bizarre, and in the world of technological advancement, it seems as though this particular gadget has taken a leap backwards. Surely the new XIAO Tip-521 is nothing other than a Polaroid camera.

Whilst wading through printer reviews, admittedly in search of a traditional printer, in digital terms anyway, I found another odd offering that seemed to be a hybrid beyond usefulness or want. It was a digital photo frame with a built in printer. Now, all the reviews appear to hail this as a union fit for gadgetry heaven; not only do your favourite images flash before your very eyes as if it was your last living moment, but the stylish frame will print off any picture you want, a godsend when someone is singing praises about your photographic skills and wants nothing more than a copy of the picture for themselves.

I feel the cynicism creeping in. I love the inventiveness of the human mind, but sometimes I feel that some ideas should be shelved to leave room for something a bit more useful. In my search for a printer, I was looking out for functionality, performance, quality, affordability and aesthetic pleasure; not the Swiss army knife of gadgets and gizmos. A photo printer that displays pictures is one thing, but a photo frame that prints pictures is incredibly different; in the same way that a sad rabbit would be considered an entirely different kettle of fish from a 'not a happy bunny'. The trouble is that when too many functions are combined in one product, there is a tendency for compromise. Take my all in one printer, scanner and copier.

It does achieve it's objective by performing all these functions, but considering that the printing is meant to be of photo quality, I was sorely disappointed. Also, the time it takes to print a page of text makes waiting for a number 28 bus to arrive seem like a click of a finger. This is why I found myself reading the printer reviews. Unfortunately, the all in one printers are popular because nobody wants a house full of printers and photocopiers for every digital application. There are enough hunks of plastic and cables and wires (ironic given that the majority of technology is now wireless) strewn around the average office space and home without adding the contents of a shelf from Dixons.

Reflecting upon this kind-of conundrum, I made my choice. If I wanted to reproduce some text, then I would do it the old fashioned way and use pen and paper to write a letter or list or directions to the other side of town; so that is one function dealt with. If I want a photocopy of something, I will go to the library and use a photocopier; leaving just the printing to contend with. At this point I'm tempted to indulge my aesthetic desires, sprinkled with a little humour and invest in the Hello Kitty redesign of Canon's Selphy photo printer. It's pink, it's impractical, it's just what every girl needs!

In the world of new computer parts, the person who sells them the cheapest is either the person with the lowest over heads such as a teen still living at home or the big businesses who can buy them in bulk.

For every other business it comes down to the person who takes the smallest piece out of the pie, because their suppliers are all usually the same people,but it is a tough game to be in. Second hand and older parts however, can be quite lucrative at times if you have the right parts and the right buyers.

For example, I have an old twelve inch Dell laptop and because of its small size, it carries its floppy and CDRom drive externally via a small cable. Should this cable become damaged, it would cost at least one hundred dollars to get it replaced, because they are very hard to obtain since they break so easily and no more of this type are being made.

Another example is if an old computer has a hard drive failure but upgrading is not a viable option, then you will not be able to go down to the local supplier and put a three hundred twenty gig hard drive in it simply because the old computer simply will not support it. The computer will need a hard drive, which is similar size to the one it had in it.

A second hand forty gig hard drive from a store typically sells for around forty dollars and a new three hundred twenty gig new hard drive retails for about one hundred twenty dollars. Guess which one has the bigger markup on it? The forty gig hard drive, which can be obtained for around ten dollars is you know where to look.

Chances are that there are computer auctions in your city where liquidated business or ex-government computers are being sold for dirt cheap. To find them, use Google and search for computer auctions your city name. Typically you go to the auction location the day before to inspect the hardware where you can make notes about each item number and the next day go bid for them. At a computer auction you can expect to see many ex-government clone computers, old servers, boxes of mixed hardware, old, but never used hardware, and lots of software which may not even be that old.

It is quite possible to pick up five working one ghz computers with two hundred fifty six ram and forty gig hard drives for thirty dollars each. If you strip them down and sell their parts individually such as the hard drive for forty dollars, then you have already made back your money on one computer and you still have the RAM, CPU, optical drives and mother board to sell.

From my own experience with auctions there is one big tip I can give you. Go and inspect the hardware the day before to check if they all work, if they are what they are labeled and write down the maximum you are willing to pay for that hardware, because it is easy to go above what they are worth if a bidding war occurs.

Speaking of the labels on computer hardware at auctions, a fellow blogger spotted some 1ghz Xeon servers labeled as normal Pentium 3 desktops at an auction. He brought all of them for five thousand dollars and had made a total twenty five thousand after expenses by selling them on eBay. EBay is generally more expensive, because of bidding wars with other people like yourselves buying with the intention to resell.

However, it is common to find some real gems that others totally missed, especially with specific parts for specific models of computers. A tip I recommend for buying computer parts on eBay is to snipe. Sniping is the process of waiting until the very last minute before the auction ends to place the highest bid, this way you prevent a bidding war against others which can save you a lot of money in the end. EBay can also be used in conjunction with bricks and mortar computer auctions like in the blogger link I posted above by buying cheap at actions and selling for more on eBay.

Headlines Get Attention. Copy Closes The Sale

Google ad copy and you will have your choice of 85,000,000 websites! With so much information available on this subject, I find it puzzling that the majority of newspaper ads have weak copy.

Pick up any newspaper anywhere and actually read the copy in the display ads.

Here is a quarter page ad for an electronics store headlined ALL OUT BLOW OUT! This ad crams 20 tiny photos of various electronic products into 32 square inches of space with a large price, the name of the item and one measly line of copy. 12 additional items are line listed with just their price.

This electronics store ad looks pretty much like every other ad for electronics stores: borax and boring!

Why not use the same space and feature ONE major item like a big screen TV and then write a benefit (what is in it for me?) for every feature (what the television does or has)?

Difficult? Not really!

Write copy like your target audience talks. Use coffee shop English. Write copy as though you are talking to ONE person eye-to-eye.

Next is an ad for general hardware store - a half page ad headlined FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT SAVINGS! This ad shows 17 items each one illustrated with black and white clip art showing a small regular price and a large bold sale price. Each item has one to three lines of bullet copy listing features.

Give your target audience a reason to shut off their TV, get their fanny out of their La-Z-Boy and bop down to your store ASAP so they can be the first in their neighborhood to make trimming a hedge with the Zippy Hedge Trimmer a no-brainer.

I would not stay in your store very long if all you chose to tell me is the PRICE! Why in the world would I make any effort to respond to your ad that tells me only the price?

These two ad examples combined advertise 49 items with only 127 words of copy and not one benefit! Both headlines are lame at best.

Results? Poor!

Reason? No benefit copy - only features.

Whose fault? Yours!

You can add color, enlarge the ad space, increase the frequency and all will accomplish is a bigger ad bill for continued paltry results.

You do not need to be a wordsmith to write copy that sells. Make two columns on a sheet of paper. Head the first column Features and the second column So that you get...

Add a W-I-I-F-M to every feature you list: What is in it for me?

Next tell me why I should buy from you. That question goes through the mind of anyone who reads or hears your ad. Each person subconsciously weighs the pros and cons of buying from you or your competitors.

If you say you offer better value what does that mean? Will your product last longer? Does it taste better? Do you offer a 5 year guarantee when your competitors only offer one?

Put some meat on the bone!

Finally, be sure to tell me why I should buy NOW. Only 33 units to sell at this price. When they are gone, they are gone.

Do not attempt to take apart the hard drive you intend to use on your computer as it will not be able to work after the deed is done.

Hard drives are actually quite small and are contained in sealed aluminum boxes. On one side, there is a panel of electronics that detaches from the rest of the hard drive. These electronics control the read and write functions as well as the motor that spins the platters, which we will get into in a bit. It is the job of the electronics to turn the magnetic domains into bytes for reading and to return those bytes into magnetic domains for writing.

If you look under the board of electronics, you'll find the connections for the motor and a vent hole. The purpose of the vent hole is to equalize pressure from internal and external air sources to keep things running smoothly and to release heat that is built up during the running of the hard drive.

You will also find the mirror like platters, which spin at speeds up to 7,200 rpm when the drive is operating and the arm, which holds the read and write heads. Most computers, with the intent of increasing the amount of data the drive can store, have more than one platter and more than one head. Usually, the number of platters is doubled in the number of read and write heads held by the arm. In other words, if a computer has three platters, then it will most likely have six read and write heads, or arms.

As can be expected, the arm must move at an extremely rapid pace and be exactly precise in its movement. For this reason, the motor for the arm is constructed using a high speed linear motor. Not all computers use the same motor, though, for this purpose. Some use voice coil, which is a technique commonly seen and used to move the cone of speakers in a stereo.

Data is stored on the surface of each platter. The pattern looks similar to a pie as a computer uses sectors and tracks to store information. Tracks have a concentric shape while sectors look like pie wedges. Sectors are also finite in the number of bytes each can store, which is typically either 256 or 512 bytes and are therefore often stored in clusters on the platter.

Now that you know the inner components of your computer's hard drive, perhaps your curiosity will be sated, thus saving your hard drive from any harm. Each component of the hard drive works in tandem with every other part to deliver a high performing and speedy work environment for you, the computer's user. While fragile in nature considering the response of a hard drive to being dismantled for observation, most users can expect a hard drive to last for many years before needing to be replaced. The hard drive is not a mysterious part of your computer, but rather the central intelligence of your computer and its capabilities based on what you tell it to store for you.

Next time you get in your car, take a moment and look around -- quite a collection of electronic content isn't there? Yes, there is. In fact, most projections indicate that the use of electronics in automobiles is increasing at such a rapid rate that by the end of the decade more than 40 percent of an automobile's cost will be in electronics. That's an amazing number that was virtually impossible to imagine 10 to 15 years ago, but is now very much a reality.

What you see electronically from your view in the driver's seat is only the tip of the iceberg. With advanced features in the automobile such as telematics, DVD/video, satellite radio, GPS navigation, automatic climate control, electronic stability control, power doors, seats, mirrors and windows...the fact is there is an increasing amount of electronic sophistication in the automobile. And these are just the systems you can see.

Beneath the surface of your vehicle, changes have occurred over the past 10 years equally as dramatic as those in the passenger compartment. Just about every system in which an actuator drove the mechanical or hydraulic system has been replaced by an electronic sensor and switch augmenting the mechanical and hydraulic systems. Many of these critical systems and electronic control units (ECUs) manage the brakes, airbags and steering.

The "electronification" of the automobile is being driven by today's consumers and their demands for increased reliability, not to mention the more basic desire for more sensory sizzle. Consequently, automakers are scrambling to recruit talent and retool an industry that, until recently, mechanical engineers and design software had dominated. A new day is dawning in the automotive world, and automakers and their suppliers need a savvy electronics staff and supplier-support structure that can deal with electronic-design issues that are unique to the automotive arena.

The major challenge facing automotive electronics designers is the high degree of connectivity required within the vehicle. In just the past decade, the magnitude and complexity of the interconnection of automotive electronics has increased dramatically. Depending on the vehicle, there can be 3 to 15 ECUs (over 50 in some high-end vehicles) with hundreds of embedded software modules; and each of these applications must inter-communicate. Adding to the complexity is that each ECU presents its own challenge, given that the software, middleware and application software is written by different companies, yet must be integrated together within the overall framework of the vehicle.

The pressure falls squarely upon the tier-one suppliers, because today's auto manufacturers don't design the electrical systems; it's the responsibility of the many tier-one suppliers to design the electronic subsystems found within our vehicles. Tier-one vendors, in turn, rely on tier-two vendors, essentially semiconductor and pc-board-design vendors, to supply and even custom-design components for each ECU.

Automakers design automobiles four years in advance of their commercial release, so auto manufacturers today are working on 2012 cars, vans, SUVs and trucks that they will release in mid-2011. They take responsibility to conceive an approximation of the electronics inventory, such as a list of ECUs and their behavioral specifications. This can even include data about the ECU's networks that includes low- and high-speed controller-area networks and local-interconnect networks. The manufacturers almost never specify the actual electronic components; they rely on their suppliers to delve into that detail.

This is just the start of the process. The manufacturer shops the rough specifications to the tier-one suppliers for bid, narrows the field down to perhaps three finalists for each ECU and demands that each of the finalists deliver a prototype within six months. Once the prototype meets the functionality requirements, the supplier designs an actual scale model ECU. When the manufacturer begins testing, it's not uncommon for the ECU's specifications to change, further adding time, money and complexity to the design phase.

And therein is the crux of the challenge that automotive companies face -- how to shorten the traditional automotive design phase in conjunction with the ever-changing demands of today's electronics-eager consumers. Ask yourself this question, "How many people do you know that have a four-year old cell phone?" With the infotainment options available to consumers both outside and inside their vehicles, automotive manufacturers are under pressure to stay current with the demands of these consumers, many of whom are updating their entertainment gadgets every year.

Manufacturers and suppliers are up to meeting the challenges. Real-time design and testing, developing streamlined communications across each design tier, more standardized products and application-specific standard products -- these are just a few of the solutions that are being implemented to deliver cutting-edge electronics to an ever-demanding automotive customer in today's, and tomorrow's, cars and trucks.
